However, maintenance implementation in practice still encounters various constraints that may lead to equipment failures and operational disruptions. This study aims to analyze the implementation of cargo handling equipment maintenance on MT Lomba Mas, identify factors affecting maintenance effectiveness, and evaluate crew competencies in supporting maintenance activities. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with the Chief Officer, Third Officer, and Bosun, and document analysis of maintenance logs and damage reports. Data were analyzed using an interactive process consisting of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that maintenance activities have generally followed the established Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), including daily inspections and periodic maintenance practices. Nevertheless, maintenance implementation remains predominantly oriented toward corrective maintenance, as reflected by recurring failures such as corrosion, pipe leakage, and mechanical component wear. The major constraints identified include limited maintenance time, aging equipment, adverse weather conditions, spare part availability, and human resource factors. Furthermore, crew competencies were found to be adequate for routine maintenance activities; however, troubleshooting capabilities for handling more complex failures still require improvement. The study highlights the importance of strengthening consistent implementation of preventive and predictive maintenance strategies to enhance equipment reliability, operational safety, and efficiency on tanker vessels.
2026-09-01T00:00:00+07:00 Copyright (c) 2026 JURNAL SAINS DAN TEKNOLOGI MARITIM
